The Writer’s Room is much more than a coworking space. Poets, playwrights, novelists, and other writers of all kinds have produced their works here since 1978, and it’s the only non-profit coworking space in New York City dedicated to creating literature. Located in the penthouse of a historic cast-iron building, members enjoy inspiring skyline views of Manhattan, including the Empire State Building. Award-winning writers have made a home here and those embarking on new careers also feel welcome. As such, members will undoubtedly benefit from the wealth of literary experience and connections they find available to them.
In business for more than 40 years, The Writers Room knows what writers desire in a work environment and writing community. To that end, it offers various desks on multiple types of schedules to ensure any member finds a good match. As you might expect, privacy and quiet are encouraged among the partitioned work areas. However, The Writers Room also understands that community spurs creativity, so communal areas are the norm here, not isolated offices. Meanwhile, members enjoy comfortable chairs for relaxing between bursts of creativity, have access to a kitchen, and can keep their materials safe in private lockers so that they don’t have to tote them to and from their homes. Complimentary snacks, research and reference books, a separate telephone nook, and weekend support staff are also available.
Located in NoHo between the East and West villages, The Writers Room is open to members 24/7 and is easily accessible by public transit. It also has 24-hour security in the lobby, and the elevators are secured outside normal business hours. On occasional evenings and weekends, it also holds a variety of events. Some of these feature members who have recently published work, while others feature guests with a nexus to writing, art, or the larger literary and art community. Overall, The Writers Room is designed for the writer who needs a quiet place to dream, create and converse with others in their industry.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
While storage in coworking spaces is generally limited, and mostly reserved for members with dedicated desks or private offices, you should always check with the coworking operator about additional storage solutions. Fill out the form on the right side of the page to reach out to them and learn all about the available options.
-
Open desks may be the ideal choice if you thrive in a collaborative environment and value the opportunity to connect with fellow coworkers. Dedicated desks, on the other hand, provide a designated space with shared community amenities, catering to those who seek a balance between privacy and interaction.
For ultimate focus and private interactions, private offices are best for solo individuals and teams that seek uninterrupted productivity.
Selecting the most suitable workspace for you typically hinges on your work style and preferences, but it can also be determined by the type of work that you do, its duration, and whether you work alone or in a team.
-
With a monthly membership, 740 Broadway offers 24/7 access to its workspace, allowing you to work at any hour that suits your schedule. Hourly and day passes, however, typically grant access during regular business hours only.
-
Flexibility is the cornerstone of coworking, so you always have the option to adjust your workspace to match your current needs. With month-to-month memberships, you can effortlessly upgrade, downgrade, or even switch between different coworking plans.
While the standard practice is to change memberships only once the current one ends, The Writers Room may be able to offer additional options, so it’s best to reach out to their staff directly.
-
Most coworking space amenities are open to all members, regardless of the membership plan. Meeting rooms require prior reservation, and private offices are exclusively available to those with subscription packages. However, the lounge, kitchen, and breakout spaces are open to everyone. Complimentary amenities are also available to all, while ancillary services can be purchased or negotiated individually with The Writers Room.

Why Choose The Writers Room
In business since: 1978
Founded in 1978 by five writers who met in the New York Public Library on 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue, The Writers Room is the nation’s oldest and largest urban writers’ colony. It is New York City’s only not-for-profit workspace dedicated entirely to the creation of literature in all of its forms.
